It's been a while between posts, but I guess that just means there's more that's happened (naturally!) I've started concentrating on developing my business further, while applying for various arty work. I've also been in an exhibition to celebrate mental health week here in Australia, called Under The Rug. It was lovely to be a part of something so important - my sculpture (see left) I named 'Hippocampus'. For those that aren't aware, Hippocampus translates to 'seahorse', but I felt it's name also described how out of my own depth I felt as a mature aged student, tackling university full-time, raising a family married, then single, illness, disability, surgery, people dying (how rude!), to say nothing of the added excitement of trying to re-learn lost skills, a new way of thinking and seeing in terms of art and just life generally carrying on for the five years I was a student. I wanted to yell "You go freaking Mental Health Week!" As I coiled and stitched my native and introduced grasses ferociously into shape, I felt that every stitch was emulating the reshaping of me. My fingers split and bled - the finished sculpture really is incredibly strong - yet I get the greatest satisfaction from my fibre textiles work. Hippocampus did not sell - but I know what has gone into it. The value of that is priceless.
